I've been thinking.
Actually I think about this project most of my awake time and sometimes at night as well :)
When I played Archon the other day I reminded myself that the "pawns" of the game does have very short distant weapons (actually just a sword or a club sticking out when you press fire). Maybe instead of Pawn and Defender (talking about them later) we could have some human units (soldiers? cyborgs? mechlike?) that really needs to come in close and beat the crap out of the bigger units? Suggestions?
As I modelled the Defender yesterday it more and more became car-like (bungie) and maybe we could try adding a new steering technique for it. Well it's the same as Accelerate/Rotate/Break with the only differences that you cannot Rotate it without having speed (just as a car) and at some velocity it starts slide. Also Im thinking about being able to adjust angle of the nadelauncher it the back so you can alter the distance the grenade will be launched. This will of course bring up this unit from being a weak unit up to the others status.
If we give the pawn some lasers of some kind instead that go very far but takes some time to reload it will also be powerful (as it can shoot in all angles) leaving us with no weak units (tadaa lets put those cannonfodder humans in!)
One issue I havent mentioned yet but was crucial in the original game was the spellcasting units (wizard and sorceress). They could teleport units to any square, heal units, switch units with each other, summon elementals, bring in a destroyed unit, freeze a unit for some rounds etc etc.
I think that brought a lot of tactical elements in the game and we should have something similar in this game. What kind of unit, how it would look like and operate, I don't know. Please help me out with suggestions.
You think this could be good changes?

not sure i like the range changes of the lower units. part of the strategy of the lower units of the original is that you had to get in close to do something.
spell replacement ideas:
teleport: few thoughts here.
a) we could have some sort of mechanical lift device to transport them
b) we could make the floor panels lower into the floor and then pop back up with the unit in the new location (so we dont actually show how they moved)
c) we could have some sort of teleportation portal open
heal units: we could have some sort of maintenance robot zoom in and do a bit of work
switch units: same as teleport
summon elementals: same as teleport, but the platform lowers empty and raises with the new unit
bring in a destroyed unit: again, same as teleport
freeze a unit: i see some sort big magnet, some sort of restraining device, or EMP pulse
i think the advantage here is that it is a chessboard type atmosphere. assuming in this "future" people are playing this as a competition or game, i think its reasonable to assume they would have things like repair bots or movable platforms in place.
thoughts?
